A Return to Black & White: Finding Rhythm in the Ordinary

This quiet corner is a reminder: God meets us not in the noise, but in the soft spaces of our day.

Years ago, I had a little ritual—posting black and white photos every Tuesday. Or was it Thursday? Either way, it was a creative challenge I loved. Today, I’m bringing that tradition back. I’m going black and white again!

Creative Constraints: A Gentle Reset

One of the best ways to grow creatively is to set boundaries. Giving yourself rules—like only shooting in black and white—forces you to see differently. It might mean I take fewer photos today, but that’s okay. I tend to lean into monochrome most when I’m photographing people, light, and contrast.

That said, I might not take many photos today. I naturally lean toward black and white photography for portraits rather than everyday scenes. But I’m excited to explore whatever the day brings—through a monochrome lens.

Grateful Moments: Teacher Appreciation in Slovakia

Work today came with an unexpected shower of kindness. My students brought me all sorts of treats in honor of Teacher Appreciation Day (which was on Friday). I arrived at my desk to find little goodies waiting for me, and my heart just about melted.

I’ve really come to appreciate how Slovakia takes the time to celebrate teachers and the work we do. It’s a refreshing change from my experience in the U.S., where this kind of recognition felt much rarer. A few years back, it even snowed during Teacher Appreciation Week—which feels far from today’s sunny mood.

Life is repetitive, but memory turns it into something rare.

Unexpected Finds: Daffodils with Character

On my way home, I spotted the most beautiful daffodils—bold, cheerful, and full of personality. I couldn’t resist. At just two euros each, I ended up with a generous bundle.

I’m thinking about doing a little daffodil photo shoot tomorrow after work. There’s something about their shape and vibrance that I know will translate beautifully—even in black and white. For now, they’re brightening up our living room for family night, and I love the atmosphere they’ve created.

Wrapping Up My First Black & White Day

That’s it for day one of my black and white photography return. It felt nostalgic, grounding, and creatively refreshing. It also reminded me of the power of small rituals—those little practices that help us stay inspired.

What about you? Do you enjoy black and white photography? Have you ever used constraints or themes to push your creativity forward? I’d love to hear.
